Anybody have experience with the Opel 3.0l engine in the Saturn LW300? I’m asking because a friend of mine is in the market for a cheap/practical/reliable boring car, and we found a nice looking Saturn wagon. Robert is a Van man at heart, with his first car being a Chrysler T&C named Baby. But he’s also a single guy who likes to travel and visit friend so a minivan with minivan MPG, and price tag doesn’t really make sense for him(I’m honestly surprised how well minivans hold their value). So a wagon seems a good compromise.

I want to help him make a good choice, and that means something that’s not going to empty his pockets every other month. So should I dodge this bullet or is a good one?

A FWD version of the Catera engine. (Saab, etc.)

For sure, the oil to water cooler in the valley has been known to leak oil into coolant.

Make sure a full timing belt service has been done too.

Great engine, right up till it stops working. Its high maintenance but also kind of nice to drive.

Yeah in guessing with that tiny engine bay and DOCH V6 a T belt change wouldn’t be cheap. Or easy to DIY.

Look out for valve cover oil leaks too.

I just traded mine in.

As long as the mechanical of the engine are fine it will run forever. Had mine for 9 years and barely did anything to it. Started at 125k miles and made it to 197k miles. The only major engine issue I had is the valve cover gaskets came loose once.

Most of the issues are with everything connected to the engine. The most common is the transmission solenoids will fail. This causes a “Service” Light to come on the dash (this is different than a CEL and cannot be read by a standard OBDII reader). The trans computer then panics and shifts at maximum fluid pressure. This is solved by shutting the car off for 30 seconds and turning it back on. This is not an issue worth fixing if it crops up.

The thing that killed the car for me was the AC kept dying. I had to replace some component 3 of the 9 years I owned mine. But I am not certain if that is a common issue or just bad luck for me.

The engine is a lot more fun than you think. 183 hp, and no qualms revving to 6500 RPM. Gas mileage is 18-21 City and 27-30 Highway (33 if you run 55).

Price wise, KBB excellent private party is $2200, it is a decent deal, but there is no trade-in value regardless of mileage so if your buddy plans on trading it in the future it probably won’t net much.

I had one some years ago, extremely spacious. Wasn’t a bad carat all, never left me anywhere, comfortable and got out of it’s own way. I had issues (which I heard was common but never verified) with CEL due to evap system codes. Never did figure it out.
